Trank Zappa Grappa in Varese so očitno zelo aktivni, saj so leta 2008 izdali svoj debitantski izdelek, zdaj pa so nas leta 2009 počastili že z novo ploščo. Tokrat so se odločili za žive predelave nekaterih del Franka Zappe, mogoče ravno zato da upravičijo svoje ime. Album vsebuje pet skladb in je dolg nekaj več kot dvajset minut.
Začnejo z Willie The Pimp. Ta verzija se na začetku zdi nekoliko zadržana, a potem se razživi in glasbeniki res počastijo Franka Zappo s to izvedno. Nadaljujejo s klasiko iz zgodnjih Zappinih dni – Mother People, potem pa se odpravijo h Gumbo Variations, kjer so njihovi improvizacijski talenti najbolj očitni. Temu sledi še ena zgodnja lepotica – Mom & Dad, koncertni album pa zaključijo še z dvema dodatnima klasikama Franka Zappe – Apostrophe’ in King Kong.
Zappa je definitivno eden težjih izvajalcev za delati priredbe, ker ima dostikrat izjemno težko zastavljene kompozicije, težavne tehnično odigrane dele, itd. Stauss in tovariši to storijo navidez brez vsakršnih težav, kar pač pokaže kako izjemni glasbeniki so. Tudi izbira skladb je zanimiva. Odločili so se za mešanico Zappinih bolj jazzovskih del in zgodnjih satiričnih rock zadev.
Trank Zappa Grappa in Varese so iz sebe spravili še en odličen album, o temu ni dvoma. Zanimivo je slišati nekatere Zappine vokalne kompozicije odigrane čisto instrumentalno. Če kdo lahko te stvari odigra kot se spodobi, je to Stauss in njegova druščina. Album pokaže veliko spoštovanja do Zappe in na delu prikaže izjemne glasbenike, ki igrajo vrhunsko glasbo.

Trank Zappa Grappa in Varese are obviously very active, having released their debut album in 2008 and now already gracing us for the second time in one year with another release. This time, they’ve opted to put out some Frank Zappa tunes, if for nothing else than to do their name justice. The album features five pieces and is just over twenty minutes long.
They kick the album off with Willie The Pimp. The version seems rather restrained at first but it gets livelier later on and they really do Frank justice with this rendition. They continue with a classic from the early Zappa Days – Mother People and head to the Gumbo Variations next, where their improvisational talents seem to truly shine. This is followed by another early gem – Mom & Dad and they bring the concert album to a close with two further Zappa classics – Apostrophe’ and King Kong.
Zappa is definitely one of the more difficult artists to cover because of his sometimes difficultly structured compositions, technical passages, etc. Stauss and co. seem to do it without any difficulties at all, which simply shows what fabulous musicians they are. The choice of songs is interesting. They’ve opted to choose a mixture of Zappa’s jazz tunes and his early satirical rock stuff.
Trank Zappa Grappa in Varese have produced a finely played album, that’s for certain. It’s interesting to hear some of Zappa’s vocal pieces being performed in a purely instrumental fashion. If anyone could do these tunes justice in this way, it’s Stauss and his colleagues. This album shows a great deal of respect for Zappa and portrays some wonderful musicians performing some top-class music.
